Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $1,143,143)
The purpose of this award is to develop or enhance access to sexual assault forensic exams for adult and adolescent victims of sexual assault using telemedicine technology in underserved communities such as (but not limited to): correctional facilities, including juvenile detention facilities, college or university campus health centers, rural areas, tribal areas, and victim service centers with co-located medical forensic services.
The Pennsylvania State University will be expected to create or expand a statewide telemedicine center for sexual assault medical forensic exams within the state of Pennsylvania. The telemedicine resource center will be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with highly trained, experienced Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANEs) licensed to practice in Pennsylvania. The telemedicine center will have the technological capability for the SANEs to directly assist in the examinations being conducted at four pilot sites: 3 rural sites and 1 correctional facility.
